Code: LEICA/CALONOX2VIEWLRFProduct detailed description
For ethical hunting and accurate game identification
The new Leica thermal cameras combine high performance, optimal ergonomics and a laser rangefinder for distance measurement and distance determination.
With the Leica Calonox 2 thermal imaging camera, Leica Sport Optics introduces a new generation of thermal imaging technology and with the Calonox 2 Sight LRF the brand's first thermal imaging camera with a built-in laser rangefinder. The renowned German optical company thus sets another milestone in the field of optoelectronic devices used for hunting and wildlife observation. The Leica Calonox 2 series includes four new thermal imaging models:
Leica Calonox View - Observational Thermal Imaging
Leica Calonox View LRF - thermal imaging with laser rangefinder
Leica Calonox Sight - thermal imaging foreframe
Leica Calonox Sight LRF - thermal imaging front sight with rangefinder
Triple perfection - performance, design and rangefinder.
The new Leica thermal imaging cameras are designed and manufactured in Germany. For essential parts such as special lenses and sensors, Leica uses exclusively European components. The highest quality components and the most precise manufacturing combine to achieve the legendary excellence that Leica customers appreciate.
Wetzlar, Germany. 11 September 2023. Thermal imaging cameras require no light and can be used in complete darkness. Sophisticated sensors react to thermal radiation from the target object and display it on microdisplays. Thermal imaging cameras can also be used during the day. The scene then looks different from natural sunlight, but offers advantages such as quick detection of animals that are naturally camouflaged. Electronic color filters and individually adjustable image modes support and optimize the user experience.
Thermal imaging scopes are suitable for a wide range of applications - for example for searching and counting, photography or wildlife hunting. Because estimating the distance via a thermal imager is very difficult, the Leica Calonox 2 Sight is equipped with an additional rangefinder (LRF stands for "laser rangefinder"). This ensures the determination of the exact distance and eliminates the risk of a bad shot due to a wrong distance estimation.
Ideal sensor for natural, sharp and high contrast images
Thanks to the high-quality sensor from LYNRED, the Leica Calonox 2 is a state-of-the-art instrument for hunters and wildlife observers. The sensor is 640x480 pixels in size and features 12 µm pixels. This guarantees a sharp and high-contrast image. An object with a standard size of 1.8 metres can be clearly detected up to a distance of 2210 metres. Recognition is possible at 770 metres and reliable identification at 390 metres.
The optimum image is ensured by LIOTM (Leica Image Optimization) software, which Leica has further improved. The refresh rate of 60 hertz also results in a very smooth image. Likewise, it is possible to take video footage of moving objects without disturbing interference. The NETD (Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference) value of the Calonox 2 is <40 millikelvin (mK). This value indicates the smallest possible temperature difference that the thermal imager is able to detect and display. The key technical specifications of the Leica Calonox 2 series ensure that these devices are future-ready and up to the challenges ahead.
+ high quality LYNRED sensor
+ The 640x480 pixel sensor has 307,200 pixels (0.3 megapixel resolution)
+ small detection cells with a pixel pitch of 12 micrometers (12 µm).
+ sharper and higher contrast image
+ high quality lens system
Essential advantages of a laser rangefinder
For physical reasons, it is almost impossible to estimate the distance using thermal imaging alone. Comparison objects for size estimation are often not well visible due to the lack of thermal radiation and due to the limited depth of field. The image is two-dimensional, which eliminates the spatial vision needed for distance estimation. In addition, thermal imagers do not reproduce a reflective image, which makes orientation in the field difficult. Therefore, a rangefinder is essential for safe hunting.
With more than 30 years of experience in laser rangefinder design, Leica Sport Optics has consistently created cutting-edge innovations in optoelectronic device design. The thermal imaging front sight with built-in rangefinder represents another milestone in German engineering.
+ Leica is the only premium supplier of thermal imaging cameras with an integrated rangefinder with a range of up to 1200 meters.
+ no time loss due to switching to another range-finding device
+ no interruption of distance detection if the hunting situation changes
+ no need to look for a previously targeted animal
+ certainty that the animal has not changed position in the meantime
Optimally easy to use, yet lightweight and compact
In line with Leica's principles, ease of use is a key part of the design of Leica products. Anyone picking up a Leica Calonox 2 for the first time will immediately notice the intuitive design of all its features. A large, robust metal control ring switches the instrument on - and makes it easy to switch from day to night mode. A latching magnetic switch keeps the unit running while switching, saving time. A particularly handy feature: an optional remote control that activates the range-finding function. Allows continuous observation through the scope. The remote control can also be used to trigger video and photo functions at the touch of a button.
Thanks to the Live View function in the Leica2Hunt app, a second person can simultaneously look through the binoculars or help track wildlife.
+ small remote control can be flexibly mounted, e.g. on the rear or front of the stock.
+ Continuous measuring with built-in rangefinder
+ extremely easy to use: only a few buttons, each with several functions
+ "auto-off" and "display-off" times are individually adjustable
+ The Live View function allows remote monitoring via the thermal imager, for example via smartphone, in conjunction with the Leica2Hunt app (available 2024).
Mounting and replacement of the sight without calibration
The accuracy of a hunting rifle depends on the sighting optic and the way it is mounted. Leica engineers have achieved perfection in the assembly of the front sight components. They were able to adjust the image shown on the display so that subsequent corrections and priming are not necessary. Thanks to components of the highest precision and a sophisticated manufacturing process, the Leica Calonox 2 Sight arrives precisely centered. After mounting the Leica Calonox 2 Sight, no additional calibration of the rifle scope is required. The instrument can be removed from the box, mounted and used immediately.
The Calonox 2 Sight can be used with most commercially available rifle scopes. Choosing a product from the Leica Magnus i, Fortis, Amplus or PRS range of riflescopes ensures an optimal match. This not only results in a compact overall system, but also guarantees a high quality rifle scope.
+ calibration of the rifle scope is not necessary - out of box use
+ the hit point does not change if the device is removed and reinstalled, even when switching between different hunting rifles with rifle scopes
+ mounting with commercially available adapters for almost all riflescopes - see leica-calonox.com for an overview
+ for example, by choosing the Leica Fortis 1.8-12x42 universal riflescope you get a compact instrument for night hunting.
The future with the newly developed Leica2Hunt app
As a complement to the Leica Calonox 2 riflescope, the new, easy-to-use Leica2Hunt app is available for free for mobile phones. This app establishes wireless contact with the Leica Calonox 2 and allows easy setup of functions via smartphone or tablet. Users will appreciate the clear display. Instrument functions are displayed in an overview and can be set here. In future updates, custom functions with additional individual settings will be added.
Calonox 2 is state-of-the-art, so the app offers the possibility of adding new, exciting features in the future. With this possibility of further development and through software updates, Leica Sport Optics ensures the sustainability of the product. Updates are very simple, wireless (OTA) and completely cable-free. Features such as target point tracking in the field are already planned for laser rangefinder models via a future app update. Technical updates to the device are not required for this.
+ state-of-the-art technology and updates for the future ensure sustainability
+ Quick start menu offers the most important features at a glance
+ individual settings can be made via the app, which will be continuously expanded
Finding, observing, identifying and counting wildlife
Thermal imaging cameras can operate in complete darkness and can be used during the day because they reproduce the thermal radiation of objects independently of the light visible to humans. This greatly extends the range of applications. For example, fawns left in tall meadow grass can be found and saved from mowing. In nature conservation, there are many ways in which the Leica Calonox 2 View can help in monitoring (e.g. counting rabbits or birds) or simply finding well-camouflaged animals. Last but not least, missing persons can also be found, especially in open terrain in winter. Search and rescue operations in difficult terrain are also supported by the Leica Calonox 2 View.
+ with Leica instruments, wild boar can be detected at a distance of 2000 meters.
+ wild boar can be spotted at approximately 770 metres - and identified at 390 metres.
+ useful for photography and tracking
With the highest precision of Leica instruments and the ability to determine the perfect aim and hit point, Leica Calonox 2 instruments are the first choice for ethical hunters. Leica sports optics - for responsible and ethical hunting.
